Choreographer's block ? We got you

It's so hard to look at all the negativity and restrictions put on us at the moment its easy to get in a rut. BUT why not use this time to teach our dancers that you can turn your limitations into inspirations. Here are some creative ideas & challenges to help you create at home. Why not set your dancers some of these challenges in your next zoom class. These will also help you create a piece for our lockdown competition Choreography Confined!

1. Explore your space

Challenge your dancers to look at the space around them. Could you create a really interesting hip hop piece around your table or a ballet routine without leaving your bed?

2. Look at the angles and shapes around you

Observe all the different shapes and angles in your home. Can you take your cooker or sofa, for example, and try to recreate these shapes with your body?

This is one we did exploring the shapes in a zoom box

3. Play around with depth

How does a movement look different when it's closer to the camera compared to further away?

If you're working as a group, how can you use the constraints of your zoom boxes to enhance your group choreography?

4. Observe different textures

Everything from our carpet to our kitchen tiles has a different texture and feel. How can we translate textures, like smooth, spiky or fluffy, into movement?

5. Partner with objects

How can you use objects in your space to enhance your piece- not as props, but as dance partners? Can you interact with your wardrobe or your refrigerator to create new movements?

6. Play around with SCALE

Once you've created a movement phrase, what happens if you shrink it down as small as it can go? Can you fit it in your bathroom or in a box? What happens when you make it as big as possible? Can it take you from one room to another? How does changing scale affect the quality and feeling of the phrase?

I hope you enjoy these ideas I would love to see any phrases you have created inspired by the above challenges.
